As I sit here watching the credits roll to the movie of Winnie Mandela, featuring Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard, I am enthralled by the closing song (sung by Jennifer) which inquires, "would you bleed for love?"
Winnie's story with Nelson is undeniably a love story to be coveted, yet also feared. Twenty-seven years apart as husband and wife, one year imprisoned as a woman, wife and mother, due to association with your spouse whom you loved (in the physical sense) from afar, now scandalized for wrong affiliations and affections; we, the viewing audience may never know the true story or sacrifice rendered. Indeed, this is a complex story worthy of further inquiry; yet in its present ambiguous state (rest in peace, Nelson), we are left in awe of their sacrifice for a bleeding love...
The song chosen to captivate and convey the heart of this woman says it all: "Would you bleed for love?" My immediate and most honest reply...
"I don't know. But, Christ did."
